VERY FINE. THIS IS THE LARGEST RECORDED TETE-BECHE MULTIPLE OF THE 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" NUMERAL ISSUE. AN OUTSTANDING RARITY OF CLASSIC HAWAII.
The 5c "Hawaiian Postage" Scott 21a tete-beche multiple should not be confused with its "Interisland" counterpart, Scott 22a. The former is vastly rarer. This is the only example we located from our past auctions with Power Search.
In fact, unused multiples of the 5c "Hawaiian Postage" Numeral (Scott 21) are extremely rare even without the tete-beche configuration. A search of name sales produced three unused blocks: 1) the only recorded complete pane of ten, ex Ferrary, Harris, Ostheimer and Honolulu Advertiser; 2) block of eleven, ex Tows and Golden; and 3) the only recorded tete-beche block of four, ex Ferrary, Tows and Honolulu Advertiser, offered here. It is telling that no blocks were present in the collections formed by Caspary, Ishikawa and Pietsch.
Ex Ferrary, Tows and Honolulu Advertiser. With 1996 P.F. certificate. Unlisted in Scott as a block. Scott Retail for two tete-beche pairs (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE BLUISH-BLACK 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" NUMERAL.
This stamp is printed on thin yellowish white wove paper, which is similar in color and texture to Scott 20, but slightly thinner. The color of the printed design is superficially black; however, when held to intense light the ink shows a hybrid mixture of blue and black, which suggests that the printer was experimenting with ink and paper colors when this stamp was printed. Whether it is a proof (no Numeral proofs are known) or an issued stamp (only one other example is known, used and defective), we cannot say.

VERY FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE MIXED FRANKING WITH THE 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN ISLANDS" NUMERAL ISSUE AND UNITED STATES 3-CENT 1861 ISSUE.
This was carried from Honolulu to San Francisco on the Russian schooner Milton Badger, which cleared October 1 and arrived October 27. Mail going overland from this trip received an Oct. 29 datestamp in San Francisco.

VERY FINE. A SCARCE AND DESIRABLE MIXED FRANKING WITH THE 1865 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN ISLANDS" NUMERAL ISSUE AND UNITED STATES 5-CENT 1863 BROWN.
Assuming the 1865 year date is correct, this cover was carried on the American bark D.C. Murray, which cleared Honolulu on May 18, 1865, and arrived in San Francisco on June 10 (Gregory book lists datestamps that match this cover).
Ex Seybold. With 2005 P.F. certificate (Image)
