VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE SAFETY PAPER ESSAY OF THE 10-CENT LINCOLN DESIGN WITH TYPE 3 UNDERPRINT. WE ARE AWARE OF ONE OTHER, AND THESE WERE PRINTED FROM THE SAME PIECE OF SAFETY PAPER.
This is one of few safety paper essays for which more than one is known in the same color with the same underprinting. As shown in our digital reconstruction of the essay offered here and another, it is obvious they were made at the same time using the same piece of paper.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE TWO SAFETY PAPER ESSAYS OFFERED HERE ARE PROOF THAT THERE ARE MORE ORIENTATIONS TO THE PAPER THAN PREVIOUSLY KNOWN. HIGHLY EXHIBITABLE.
The Scott Catalogue lists this safety paper underprint with both vertical and horizontal orientations. It was previously thought that the 15c safety paper essays were the only ones with more than one example of a particular type. However, close examination reveals that the underprint is rotated 180 degrees on some, so technically there is no duplication. We now know there are three types: the normal underprint; underprint rotated 90 degrees; and underprint rotated 180 degrees. It is possible that one exists with the underprint rotated 270 degrees.
