2278		24c Green & Violet, Without Grill (120a). Large part original gum, deep rich colors and sharp proof-like impressions, centered slightly to top left as always for this rarity but much better centering and unusually wide margins VERY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE EXTREMELY RARE 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE WITHOUT GRILL. Our survey of auction catalogs and Philatelic Foundation records produced 23 examples of the 24c 1869 Without Grill (Scott 120a), of which half have faults. This stamp and three others are sound with original gum. The last one of this caliber (with slightly disturbed original gum) realized $47,500 in our 2009 sale of the Whitman collection. Ex Caspary. 2279		24c Green & Violet (120). Wide margins and choice centering, rich colors, used with 10c Yellow (116), intense shade, each stamp tied by New York City Foreign Mail large segmented cork cancellation on undated grayish blue folded cover to Valparaiso, Chile, sender's directive "pr. 'Alaska'" and probably carried on that Pacific Mail Steamship Co. steamship from New York to Panama sometime in the spring of 1870, the handwriting on this cover matches other covers from the firm of M. Echeverria & Co., 20 Beaver Street, New York City, carried by another steamer down the west coast of South America to the port city of Valparaiso, red "25" centavos due handstamp, light fold clear of stamps EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE COVER TO CHILE. AN OUTSTANDING FRANKING AND IN UNUSUALLY PRISTINE CONDITION. The 34c rate to Chile via Panama was reduced to 22c after February 16, 1870. The 12c reduction corresponds to the reduced British rate for transit beyond Panama on Pacific Steam Navigation Co. vessels, from one shilling (24c) to six pence (12c). 34c rate covers sent prior to February 16 show the 24c credit, but a "12" credit is definite proof that the cover was mailed after the rate reduction, as in this case. It is not unusual to see the old 34c rate paid by stamps for a period of months after the rate was reduced. The "25" handstamp is the Chilean charge for an incoming postage due. All incoming mail was subject to an "ultramar" (overseas) charge, and it was made up of 5 centavos plus twice the domestic postage (two times 10 centavos in this instance). This rate was in effect from 1853 though 1874 (our appreciation to Brian Moorhouse for this information). During the first six months of 1870, the PMSS Co. steamer Alaska sailed from New York on January 21, February 21, April 5, May 5 and June 4 (see Laurence's Ten-Cent 1869 Covers, page 78). This cover was most likely carried on one of the sailings in February, April or May. Ex Ullery (according to Ashbrook's notation in an old photograph) and Krug. Ashbrook notes on back of cover. 2280		30c Ultramarine & Carmine (121). Wide margins and beautifully centered, bright colors, tied by "New Orleans La. Oct. 20" (1869) circular datestamp and segmented cork cancel on small cover to Crest, France, red "New York Paid 6 Oct. 27" credit datestamp, red "ETATS-UNIS SERV. AM. HAVRE 9 NOV 69" octagonal arrival datestamp and "PD" in frame handstamp, French transit and receiving datestamps on back (Nov. 9 and 10, 1869) EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE COVER TO FRANCE, PREPAID FOR THE DOUBLE TREATY RATE AND BEARING APPROPRIATE MARKINGS FOR AMERICAN PACKET SERVICE. Based on the markings, this cover apparently left New York on the North German Lloyd steamer Hansa, which departed on October 28 and arrived at Southampton on November 8. The 6c credit would have satisfied the double rate for an American direct packet to Havre or Cherbourg, but this appears to have entered the French mails from England and was accepted with the 6c credit (for American packet service via England). The old French entry markings, such as the Havre octagonal datestamp on this cover, were used several years earlier and brought back into use in 1869, as evidenced by a number of covers recorded by Steven Walske and Richard F. 2281		30c Ultramarine & Carmine (121). Horizontal pair, large part original gum, minor h.r., remarkably rich and bright colors, proof-like impressions from both plates, well-centered VERY FINE. A SCARCE ORIGINAL-GUM MULTIPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE WITH EXCEPTIONALLY FRESH COLORS AND PAPER. Multiples of the 30c 1869 Pictorial with grill (Scott 121) are very scarce and seldom have the color and choice centering of this pair.
