U.S. Carriers and Locals, Featuring the Gordon Stimmell Collection continued...

1851-52 Franklin and Eagle Carriers
Lot Sym. Lot Description
522   Image(1c) Dull Blue, Franklin Carrier (LO1). Large margins to just barely in at bottom left, extraordinary rich color and proof-like impression, cancelled by red "New York" dateless circle used by carrier department, negligible small thin spot at left and faint stain visible only on back

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE FRANKLIN CARRIER STAMP WITH THE RED NEW YORK DATESTAMP.

250,000 Franklin Carrier stamps were sent to New York City in October 1851 (in addition to 50,000 to New Orleans and 10,000 to Philadelphia), but very few were used at New York. Only three Franklin Carrier covers from New York are recorded. In addition, there are perhaps five to seven off-cover stamps with the red New York dateless circle and another three or four with the black datestamp. (Image)
