"Immortal 600", Fort Pulaski Ga. Inner prisoner-of-war orange cover to Liberty Va., endorsed "Capt. H.C. Dickinson Co. A 2nd Va Cavalry & pris. of war", addressed to his wife, "Savannah Ga. Nov. 6?" circular datestamp and "10" C.S.A. due handstamp, manuscript "Examined L. Jaqueline Smith Capt. Arty." censor marking and "pr. flag of truce via Charleston", unsealed for censoring, some wear top left corner, still Very Fine, from the same prisoner as the prior Morris Island lot and an excellent companion to that cover, in late October 1864 the prisoners from Morris Island, who had been exposed to mortar fire from their Confederate batteries, were moved to Fort Pulaski at the mouth of the Savannah River, conditions were not much better there as they were forced to subsist on a near starvation diet (Image)

Letterman General Hospital, Gettysburg Pa. Manuscript "R.W. Martin Lt. Col. 53 Va. Vols." endorsement on unsealed inner prisoner-of-war cover to Pittsylvania C.H. Va. from Pickett's Charge leader Lt. Col. Rawley White Martin at Letterman General Hospital, Gettysburg, pair 5c Blue Local (7) uncancelled with ragged margins pays Confederate postage, outer cover with U.S. postage discarded at exchange point, flap with manuscript "Send answer to care of R. W. Falls, Southern Express, Richmond Va.", original enclosure dated Sep. 25, 1863 discusses his wounds, states that he sees no prospect of exchange, and references the battle of Chickamauga, couple small toning spots, Very Fine appearance, an outstanding Confederate prisoner-of-war cover, Lt. Col. Rawley White Martin of the 53rd Virginia Volunteers (Armistead's Brigade) was wounded during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and was by certain accounts the first man over the wall during that climactic battle, he survived and lived nearly another 50 years after writing this letter, after three months at the field hospital at Gettysburg he was transferred to Fort McHenry in Baltimore and then to Point Lookout before he was exchanged in May 1864 (see following lots for later Col. Patterson Capt. & Provost Marshal Point Lookout, Md." handstamp (Ty. 1), exchanged via Old Point Comfort and Richmond with "Due 10" for Confederate postage and perfect strike of "Richmond Va. Aug. 29" circular datestamp, C.S.A. postage paid by 10c Blue, "TEN" (9), large margins, light pre-use vertical crease, tied by "Richmond Va. Sep. 13" circular datestamp, U.S. postage paid by 3c Rose (65), couple tiny edge flaws, tied by target, some staining near bottom and slight overall soiling

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 10-CENT "TEN" GENERAL ISSUE STAMP ON A MIXED-FRANKING PRISONER-OF-WAR COVER. THIS IS THE FINEST CONDITION OF ONLY THREE FULL COVER USES KNOWN TO US. .

We record only three "TEN" general issue stamps on prisoner-of-war covers plus a front only (used from Point Lookout). Of the other full covers, one is faulty with tears, stains, and a replaced backflap (used from Johnson's Island). The other has a "TEN" stamp that has been trimmed to shape (used from Fort Delaware). This cover, with only slight cosmetic issues is the finest of the three (Image)

Fort Delaware, Delaware City. Cover addressed to Dr. Edward S. Sharp, "Political Prisoner, Fort Delaware", 3c Rose (65) tied by blue "Baltimore Md. Aug. 31" circular datestamp, with 2-page "Prisoner's Love Song" penned by Dr. Sharp (not the enclosure from this cover), stamp and cover toned, some cover edge flaws, otherwise Fine, according to the book The Union Prison at Fort Delaware: A Perfect Hell on Earth, Sharp was a doctor from Salem N.J. who was overheard on a steamboat criticizing President Lincoln's war policies, he was arrested and taken to Fort Delaware where he was held prisoner for three weeks (Image)
