266 c ImageJonesboro Tenn., 5c Black entire (45XU1). Clearly-struck provisional handstamp, cancelled by "Jonesboro Tenn. Dec. 24" (1861) circular datestamp on bright buff cover to Rutledge Tenn., sealed backflap tears

EXTREMELY FINE. THE JONESBORO PROVISIONAL IN BLACK, SCOTT 45XU1, IS SIGNIFICANTLY RARER THAN ITS BLUE COUNTERPART. ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED IN THE CROWN SURVEY, AND THIS IS AMONG THE FINEST.

Jonesboro (also spelled Jonesborough) is Tennessee’s oldest town and was originally part of North Carolina. It was one of the towns in eastern Tennessee that joined to form the State of Franklin, which never received congressional approval. Jonesboro was the source of abolitionist activity before the war, and many residents remained pro-Union even after Tennessee joined the Confederate States.

The Crown Survey counts fifteen examples of the Jonesboro provisional entire, including five struck in Black (45XU1) and ten in Dark Blue (45XU2). Some of these do not have any town datestamp. Despite the greater rarity of the Black 45XU1, Scott prices the Dark Blue the same (Image)

Jun. 28" circular datestamp on folded letter to Charleston S.C., datelined "Woodlands, 26 June 1861", some toning on front and edges from old tape repair, significant edge splitting inside makes the letter difficult to read safely, however this correspondence is known for outstanding war content (see Siegel Sale 754, lot 140 for an example dated three days after this), Very Fine appearance, a rare provisional with only eleven recorded by Crown, two of which are this variety without "CS" (Image)

Cancelled by small "Paid" handstamp at top left and addressed to Loudon Tenn., no other postmarks as always for these, fresh and Very Fine, our review of the Levi records found that only three of the fifteen have been cancelled, all by "Paid" handstamps, a different example from the same correspondence (Siegel Sale 954, lot 3204) received a P.F. certificate declining opinion on the "Paid" cancel, as such this will not be returnable if the P.F. again declines opinion (Image)
