Originating in Foochow with greenish-blue "Local Post Agency, Foochow" bilingual handstamp, then affixed with pair of U.S. 1890, 5c Chocolate (223) in Shanghai and tied on cover by "U.S. Postal Agency, Shanghai, Sep 9, 9 AM 93" duplex datestamp, addressed to Ravenna, Ohio, blue Shanghai Local Post, San Francisco transit and Ravenna arrival backstamps, cover with faults incl. repair at bottom right, overall toning, peripheral edge nicks and piece missing from back center, Fine, despite the faults, this is an incredibly rare usage originating in Foochow and going through the U.S. Postal Agency in Shanghai (Image)

2781 c ImageCHINA, 1898 Lungchow Registered Cover to Saigon, Indochina. Being franked by China, 1897, 1c, 2c, 4c and 10c I.C.P. Coiling Dragons, the 1c being a block of four with selvage at left and affixed to the reverse, all stamps tied on registered cover by multiple strikes of "Lungchow 15 DEC 98" bilingual large Dollar chop datestamp to Saigon, additionally franked with French Indochina 50c in Lang-Son and tied by Dec. 16 double-circle datestamp with an additional strike tying the 2c I.C.P., block on reverse tied by Haipong (Tonkin) transit and strike of Saigon arrival, registered crayon marks going through 2c and block on reverse, cover with faults incl. tone marks, file folds (affecting 2c and part of block on reverse), peripheral edge nicks, etc.

FINE APPEARANCE. A VERY RARE REGISTERED USAGE AND BELIEVED TO BE ONE OF TWO KNOWN REGISTERED COVERS FROM LUNGCHOW BEARING CHINA I.C.P. STAMPS.

Despite the faults which affect this cover, it's rarity should not be underestimated. The other known registered usage with China I.C.P. stamps from Lungchow is paying the registered triple rate and therefore received a French Indochina 40c stamp whereas this is a larger usage. (Image)
