S.C., reduced at left, fresh and Very Fine, the earliest reported use of a Confederate General Issue stamp from Charleston, the General Issues were not placed on sale in Charleston until December 7, 1861, so this stamp must have been purchased by its sender in another city (Image)

"Palmetto Gds., Gen. Gonzales", slightly reduced at right and some wear, still Very Fine, the Confederate General Issues were not placed on sale in Charleston until December 7, 1861, so this stamp must have been purchased by its sender in another city, especially interesting with the reference to General Gonzales, who was a Cuban Confederate general, illustrated in the Calhoun book on p. 12 (Image)
