5c Red Brown (1). Large margins to clear, bright shade, tied by red herringbone fancy cancel and matching "Binghamton N.Y. Jan. 25" circular datestamp on cover to Cherry Valley N.Y., ms. routing "Via Utica", barely noticeable small tear in stamp at bottom right

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE DESIRABLE BINGHAMTON HERRINGBONE CANCEL

Fancy "killer" cancels are extremely rare in the 1847-51 period. The term "killer" to describe the cancel was actually used by New York Postmaster Robert H. Morris. Although fancy rate markings from the pre-stamp era were used to cancel 1847 stamps, fancy cancels created for the specific purpose of "killing" stamps did not become popular until the 1850's.

Large to huge margins including bottom sheet margin, clear at top, dark shade on deeply blued paper, tied by red square grid cancel, matching "New-York Jun. 22" (1850) circular datestamp on folded letter to the Litchfield Conn. with letterhead of Samuel Judd's Sons & Co., manufacturers of sperm oil and sperm candles, with engraved depiction of harpooned whale and six whalers in a boat, letterhead at the top of a past due invoice (Dec. 31, 1849) for four barrels of bleached winter whale oil and four barrels of sperm oil sold to the Wolcottville Manufacturing Company, attached letter requests agent to secure payment, toning along fold does not affect the letterhead, neatly folded to fit on exhibit page and show the stamp and letterhead
