History of Western Pennsylvania's Oil Industry. Six fat binders with covers carefully mounted on annotated exhibit-style pages plus some loose material, many hundreds of items following Dr. Robertson's narrative history of early oil drilling in Western Pennsylvania during the 1860's following Colonel Drake's discovery, the familiar town names -- Corry, Miller Farm, Oil City, Petroleum Center, Pithole City, Rouseville, Tidioute, Titusville -- are represented by postal markings, cancellations, corner cards and some remarkable letters, many dating from the earliest years of the American oil boom, some large correspondences are included (mainly for letter content), a few covers would be worthy individual lots, but for the specialist in this region and chapter of economic history, we offer this as the motherlode, which was collected and studied by Dr. Robertson over 50 years, very difficult to value since a large number of common 3c 1861 covers are included, but for the collector of Western Pennsylvania town markings and oil-related content, this collection is priceless

Western Pennsylvania Postal History. The core of Dr. Robertson's collection contained in seven binders filled with exhibit-style pages, hundreds of covers arranged by town name, obviously we have pulled out the $200-plus covers for individual lotting, but what remains is the regional specialist's dream lot, comprising many truly scarce covers of great value to the town or county collector, perusing the binders we note numerous manuscript markings from tiny post offices, colored and framed handstamps, two Schofield free franks, railroad and R.P.O.'s (incl. choice strike of Baltimore & Ohio R.R. oval), a nice group of picture postcards of Warren Pa., some early markings incl. Warren, Civil War Patriotics, advertising and hotel corner cards, also includes group of Philadelphia covers and other eastern towns, condition varies, most covers look clean and attractive even if they have small faults, worth careful study

Stampless Covers and Domestic Rates. Main portion of Dr. Robertson's collection mounted in eight binders plus some covers, a few hundred stampless covers from an array of states, including California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland (earliest reported Hagerstown, ex Siskin), Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia, nice group of 18th Century showing various rates and straightline handstamps, 1800's fancy and unusual markings, waterway markings (ms. "B", "Steam Boat" and "Ship" handstamps, Pennsylvania Canal Boats, "Troy & New York/Steam Boat"), War of 1812 surcharge and restored rates, 1827-28 "Mail Route" handstamps, 1839 "Express Mail", Civil War depreciated currency markings, other unusual random items such as 1814 Fort Griswold in Groton Conn. (the fort was reopened during War of 1812), 1841 India to England with soldier's concessionary rate, also includes later stamped covers to represent odd rates and uses (territorial Tombstone, Arizona, bisect of 5c Large Numeral Postage Due, third-class mail), overall condition is excellent, while no individual rare or valuable covers have been intentionally left in this group, specialists will find many scarcer and highly collectible covers, and dealers will have an opportunity to acquire numerous $50 to $100 items to resell individually, our estimate is a small fraction of the potential eBay or retail value

Stampless Covers. More than 1,200, mostly from Northeastern states, much is New York, Maryland or Massachusetts, but others are also present, some Southern states incl. Alabama and Georgia, some Midwestern such as Illinois, Indiana and Iowa, most are from the 1830s or early 1840s, but we noticed one as early as 1814, wide range of handstamp markings, incl. some "Steamboat", condition is above average for these, with many attractive Very Fine examples, since none of these have been on the market in at least 50 years, extra scrutiny is advised, Offered on behalf of Harvard University

Medicine-Related Covers from the Talbott Correspondence. Hundreds of U.S. and foreign covers mounted on exhibit-style pages in four fat binders, all related to the Dr. M. C. Talbott family and their business selling patent medicines, including Piso's Cure and Micajeh Uterine Wafers, includes advertising, invoices, inbound covers from Germany with Eagle Issues, early Austria, sample of uterine wafers (untested, but we presume they work as well in 2013 as they did in the 1880's), condition varies since original correspondence makes up the bulk of this collection, a fascinating intact study that could be kept intact or boiled down to a great one-frame exhibit under the title "Postal History and Menses"
