France Nos. 33, 36 tied by "2240" dotted lozenge cancel addressed to Paris, corresponding Marseille Jan. 7, 1871 circular datestamp at top, manuscript "Par voie de Moulins (Allier)" directive at top, violet staining from journey packaging, Very Fine, Boules de Moulins were an attempt to bring mail into Paris during the Siege of Paris, using semi-floating balls of zinc sent down the Seine and carried by the current, this service started Jan. 4, 1871 and was discontinued Jan. 31, none actually reached Paris during the Siege; they were found later, some as recently as 1982 (Image)
