157° c Image5c Columbian (234). Rich color, tied by "U.S. Postal Agency, Shanghai, Dec. 9 10AM 93" duplex datestamp on cover to Springfield Mass., return address on back "Henry Sylva. Shanghai, China", San Francisco and receiving backstamps, fresh and Fine, the sender, an American, was a general merchant and shipping agent whose firm was bought by Hillebrandt & Co. and became one of the few Danish firms in China, he was also a member of the Shanghai Race Club (Image)

VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH SAMOAN AND UNITED STATES COLUMBIAN STAMPS.

Unlike covers prepared by stamp dealers with Samoan and U.S. frankings, this appears to be a non-philatelic use of the Columbian Issue. It was the subject of an article in the first Opinions book published by The Philatelic Foundation. (Image)
