2585 c Image20c Dark Green, Diagonal Half Used as 10c (13d). Top left diagonal half, deep rich color, used on Winnsborough S.C. 10c Black Postmaster's Provisional entire (97XU2) addressed to Macon Ga., Winnsborough control mark struck on back, bisect tied by circular grid and affixed over straightline "PAID" and "10" handstamps, same grid struck over the handstamps to make clear that the Provisional was not used as postage, "Winnsborough S.C. 16 Sep." circular datestamp with "1" in manuscript, 1864 docketing at top

EXTREMELY FINE AND A SPECTACULAR RARITY. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED USE OF A 20-CENT BISECT ON A CONFEDERATE POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ENTIRE.

The Crown book records only two examples of the 10c Winnsborough provisional: 1) unused, ex Kohn, and 2) used with 10c Blue, Die A (12) affixed over provisional (the provisional not used as postage). We sold an example in the Dr. Karl Agre collection (sale 850, lot 5803) that is the only known example used as valid postage. This example, unlisted in Crown, represents the only recorded use of a 20c bisect on a Confederate provisional cover.

Ex Caspary and Haas. With 1968 P.F. certificate (Image)

Dec. 14" circular datestamp and matching "Paid 10" straightline handstamp to Gainesville Ala, some minor cover scuffing on second use side, back with adhesive toning

VERY FINE. A RARE COMBINATION OF ADVERSITY USE AND THE 20-CENT BISECT.
