2322 E Image10c Blue, Die B, Die Essay on Wove (12E5). 22 x 27mm, bright color, tiny thin spot

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE DIE ESSAY FOR THE 10-CENT ARCHER & DALY DIE B ISSUE, ENGRAVED BY FREDERICK HALPIN.

The Die B or Type II design was a completely new engraving executed by Halpin in 1863. It is considered to be a superior work to the engraving of the Die A or Type I design by John Archer, and close examination reveals numerous differences between the two engravings. Dietz recorded only two examples of the Type II die essay. We have offered one other example, ex Murphy (Siegel Sale 795, lot 529).

Ex Bogg. With 1976 C.S.A. certificate stating "CSA 12E, Halpin die essay on wove, considered to be genuine." Mentioned in Scott but not formally listed or priced, with the statement "proofs made as essays from the dies...deeply engraved and printed in deep shades of the issued colors, but show only small differences from the stamps as finally issued. All are very rare." (Image)
