EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE JOSEPH L. BATES ONE-CENT WITH "FANCY GOODS" IN TWO WORDS, IN IMMACULATE CONDITION.

Joseph L. Bates was a Boston merchant who sold "fancy goods" such as "Rich Dress Combs, Paper Mache and Ornamental Goods, Parian Ware (Statues), Fancy Boxes, Writing Desks, Money Cases, Fans, Toys, Perfumery, Cases, Umbrellas." Bates also sold stereoscopes and views, one of which depicts his 129 Washington Street storefront (http://home.centurytel.net/s3dcor/Bates/Bates.htm ). This example of the 1c encasement is a wonderful condition rarity. (Image)
