2390 c Image5c Red Brown (1). Large margins to full, worn impression, lightly cancelled by red grid and seemingly tied at top, red "New Orleans La. Jan. 21" circular datestamp and two strikes of "Steam 5" in double-circle due handstamp on brown cover to Buchannon Carroll & Co. in New Orleans, clearly applied stencil "UNCLE SAM" Mississippi River name-of-boat marking at lower right and endorsed "pr Uncle Sam" at top, considerable ink erosion in writing and bleed-thru on inside, vertical file folds, one of which passes thru stamp, otherwise Fine, this well-pedigreed cover -- ex Matthies, Simmons, Peyton, Warm and Kapiloff -- is signed "Guaranteed Genuine by Ezra D. Cole", yet the presence of the "Steam 5" due markings makes the 5c 1847 stamp superfluous, with 2012 P.F. certificate stating that the stamp did not originate, offered and estimated as a rare stampless cover and off-cover 5c stamp (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE USE OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE ON A SHIP LETTER. PERHAPS TWO OR THREE SUCH USES ARE KNOWN.

As an inbound ship letter to Philadelphia this qualified for the 6c port-of-entry rate, but since the sender could only choose between 5c and 10c denominations, it was prepaid with 4c additional postage.
