2667 cover 1882.0913 image1882 (Sept. 13), The Great St. Louis Fair, lovely all-over design on back of Planters House Hotel corner card envelope, showing the latest mechanical plowing technology, a scene from an art gallery, three members from the zoological garden, and announcing the "grand illustrated pageant of the Veiled Prophets" (a community event and parade begun in 1878 and continuing today)—all while touting "All Railroads and Steamboats carry Passengers at reduced rates"; with two letters on Planters House letterhead (Sept. 13 and Sept. 15), from a young man to his father in Kentucky, writing about recovery from his leg injury; franked with 3¢ green Bank Note tied by circle-of-wedges cancel with Saint Louis Sept. 13 postmark alongside; cover reduced at left, cutting off the "P" of "Planters" on front but not affecting the design on reverse, Fine to Very Fine, an attractive piece. 2668 1893 image1893, Columbian Exposition Judge's Award, in gray on heavy stock, reading in part, "The United States of America by act of their Congress have authorized the World's Columbian Commission…to decree a medal for specific merit which is set forth below over the name of an individual judge acting as an examiner, upon the finding of a board of international judges…"; modeled by Charles Schlecht, designed by Will H Low, and engraved and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing; small tear to top left corner well outside the design, still Very Fine. We're pretty sure today's judges' certificates look nothing like this! Shipping charges apply - weight 1.2 lbs. (Image)
