Confederate States, Barnwell Court House, S.C., 1861, 5¢ black (Scott 123XU1), mostly clear strike with boxed PAID on cover to Rev. Iveson L. Brookes, Hamburg[h], S.C.; slight damp stain at upper left, Fine to Very Fine. An excellent example of this rare provisional, Ex-Parham, Marcus Brown, Richard Warren, signed P.A. Kaufmann.

Rev. Brookes was a fervent Southern Sectionalist and a staunch defender of slavery. His most famous defenses were two pamphlets written during the crisis of 1850: "A Defence of the South against the Reproaches and Incroachments of the North" (1850) and "A Defence of Southern Slavery against the Attacks of Henry Clay and Alexander Campbell"(1851), the latter written at the request of South Carolina Governor, James Henry Hammond.
