532   imageLiberia, 1846, letter from grandfather of Alain Leroy Locke, folded letter datelined Bassa Cove (Buchanan) to Philadelphia, entered the mails unpaid at Liverpool with boxed "11 MY 1846/ LIVERPOOL /SHIP" and red "BX" circular datestamp the next day, both markings on reverse; handstamped red boxed "Returned for Postage" and "No. 26375 Detained for Postage" (number in manuscript); originally rated 1s, then 1s2d and finally 1s8d; when payment was received the cover was postmarked red "PAID/ BI/ 23JU23/ 1846" and sent on its way, handstamped U.S. "12" in circle.

Alain Leroy Locke (1885-1954) was a prominent American writer, philosopher, educator, and patron of the arts, and the first African-American Rhodes scholar. His grandfather, Ishmael Locke (1814-52), a free-born black man, was sent to Liberia to set up schools for the native population. In the letter he writes to his employer complaining of the lateness of his salary and of "the ridiculous mode…of paying me on a route where vessels pass but once in 3 or 6 months" and of being forced to sell his books to pay for his doctor bills, having been "sick for 97 days".
