Finland, 1856, 10k rose (Scott 2), large to enormous margins, cancelled by pen cross and tied by "Helsingfors/24.2.1859" c.d.s. on folded letter sheet to Reval, framed "Polucheno/19 Feb. 1856" datestamp (Julian calendar), stamp has browning from the gum as is commonly the case with this issue, Very Fine, from the Consul Gahlnback correspondence.

France, 1830, "Éléments de la Taxe", label attached to 1830 partly-printed folded letter from the Royal Hospital Chelsea (England) to a pensioned soldier in Bern, Switzerland, postmarked red crowned circle "Free" date stamp (Nov. 8), various rate markings, the English free frank not being accepted outside Britain; the label details charges: 1f50c reimbursed to the office at Bern and French rate of 20c from the border office to destination, with boxed "Suisse/par/Delle" handstamp, outstanding Postage Due forerunner.

These "Composition of the Postage Due" labels were created to deal with public concerns about the proper calculation of charges by the postmen. France was the first country to issue this type of label, soon to be emulated by other countries . (Image)
