575   Civil War Homefront Journal, 1862-1863, this journal consists of twenty entries, each entry at least three pages long with detailed observations of the political, military and social events of the day, samples as follow 2/18/62 "…the boys were crying "Extra-capture of Fort Donaldson" as we left…the morning papers had reported the fight still continues at last account…we saw a dispatch which had come from Washington reporting the authoritative announcement of the victory to Congress…", 5/27/62 "I have not the heart to make a long entry in my journal to-day. The sad news of the defeat of Banks, the rapid pursuit of the rebels & the apparent anxiety & consternation at Washington has made me long to be at home…", 8/2/62 "…I went round to Mr Lewis to see if he had rec'd any news in his Chicago paper. There did not seem to be much except of our failure to capture the rebel boat Arkansas, abandonment of the siege of Vicksburg for the present…", 1/4/63 "But we have had the joy of reading the President's great proclamation-which he did not withhold not withstanding all the prophesies that he would…", with much more on the slavery issue, easy to read, needs further research, a rare opportunity regarding the homefront during this historic era, Fine to Very Fine.

This week, unless the S. Carolinians have been indulging in most idle threats, civil war will be inaugurated in the harbor of Charlestown. For they have expressed a determination to open their batteries upon any United States vessel that shall attempt an entrance to their port and if nothing untoward happens a steamer carrying provisions and a reinforcement of 250 men will arrive at Fort Sumter. Should her entrance be resisted of course a trial of strength will be the result. There seems to be no doubt as to the ability of Major Anderson to hold his own against all the ? that can be brought against him…", fascinating letter that proved prophetic, needs further research, Very Fine.
