Group of 50 letters and one Denver free frank as Indian Affairs Commissioner, some letters with original envelopes and entires, range of interesting content present including political related, large group of 18 letters to his wife as Governor Of Kansas Territory, content includes Dec. 21st 1857 to his wife: "…I have no expectation of getting off any better than many of my predecessors, but of one thing I am certain, they will get rid of me no sooner than I am willing to go. Mr. Station had secured the good will of one party here, and no sooner did these rascals hear of my appointment than they went to work gravely to consider whether they had not better hang me, and the only reason that they were afraid I would not suit them as well as Mr. Stanton…", and Feb. 7th 1858 to his wife: "…Every thing is now perfectly quiet in the Territory and I do not think any further difficulty of a serious character can arise. The action of Congress will have a great deal to do with the future of this country. If the Lecompton Constitution should be accepted there I will not be answerable for the consequences here…", etc.; some mixed condition, Fine and interesting correspondence group.

AN IMPORTANT JAMES W. DENVER CORRESPONDENCE.

James William Denver (1817-1892) was an American politician, soldier and lawyer. He served in the California state government, as an officer in the United States Army in two wars, and as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from California. He served as secretary and Governor of the Kansas Territory during the struggle over whether or not Kansas would be open to slavery. The city of Denver, Colorado, is named after him.
