In the spring of 1901, 924 recruited officers and men departed Halifax on the "Montfort" on 28 Mar 1901 for South Africa. Unlike other soldiers, their terms of service were for three years with an option for two more. The unit was active until 1906, after which various elements were absorbed into local governments. Roberts' Horse and Kitchener's Horse were formed chiefly from men who found their way to South Africa from various parts of the world. These corps were at first intended to be called 'The second and third regiments of the South African Light Horse', but the names were changed as a compliment to the new British Commander-in-Chief and his chief of the staff. Both Kitchener's Horse and Roberts' Horse were employed in the operations undertaken by Lord Roberts. Mail from Canadians in these units is quite scarce and can generally only be identified by mailing to a Canadian address. Any registered letters are especially elusive, with perhaps about five examples known. rnThe envelope was folded in such a manner that the contents were hidden from view and comprised a cache of coins including "3 gold pieces".
