A small European leather-bound album, very battered, from the very early days of stamp collecting with more than 500 stamps including some beautiful looking classics, all from the first few decades of stamp issuing. As this was collected in the years before stamp hinges were used, the stamps are stuck to the pages. Nevertheless there is great opportunity for those with the time and patience to separate the stamps from the page by soaking, as there are many surprisingly good issues present. Items seen include Saxony #2 and 10gr blue used, Bavaria 18kr red and four margins 18kr orange used, Belgium #1 and #2 and later perf and imperf Leopold I types unused inc. perfectly centered 10cts, Netherlands #1-6, Norway #1 and 2sk and 3sk Oscars, Russia inc. 30k rose and green, Ionian Islands and Greece with four margined Hermes heads unused and used, British Guiana with early ships, Cape of Good Hope triangles to 1/- inc. 6d gray lilac lovely full margined example used, Denmark 'Fire RBS', Danish West Indies #1 four margins unused, interesting Trinidad, St. Lucia, Grenada, Nevis, Barbados, etc, Newfoundland 3d green traingular and 1865 5cts brown common seal both used, Austria 1850 2kr gray black with four margins and Franz Josefs inc. 3kr black with red cancel, 1kr gray newspaper unused, etc, Switzerland with 5rp, 10rp and 15rp rayons as well as 2rp strubeli with frame lines all round and superb Sarnen cds postmark. The Prussia has a four margined 3sgr orange with superb 'Koenigsberg. i. Pr. abends'/evening postmark - exquisite! The Latin America also interesting with Brazil classics inc. 280r red, Montevideo suns, La Guaira steamship locals, etc. Also Turkish tughras, GB 2/- blue, Italian States especially Tuscany, Sicily, Parma and Naples, good Austalian States inc. Sydney view 2d blue, etc, etc. Condition is of course very mixed yet clearly includes some superb examples present. This description is only an overview and a thorough inspection is highly recommended. There is enormous potential here for a good number of better individual items.
Mint and used collection of more than 500 stamps in an 1863 edition European album, itself in good condition for its age, with lots of pleasant surprises among the stamps. Highlights include Denmark imperfs to 16sk violet used with four margins, GB with penny black almost four margins with red maltese cross postmark and an attractive 1862 3d rose with cds cancel, then Netherlands with first imperf and second series complete in very attractive condition with the imperfs all four margins and the 5cts #1 unused, etc. Also interesting German States including the unused , key value 1852 the 18kr of Wurttemberg with margins all round (#6, cat. $1400). Also Colombia with United States of New Grenada imperfs to 1 peso, Sweden with 9 ore violet as well as 24o, 30o and 50o, Ceylon, Hong Kong, Cape triangles, unusual St. Thomas/Porto Rico steamship locals, Dominion of Canada classics inc. 2cts red, etc, as well as useful US including a wonderful 10cts green Washington with distinct 'heart' fancy cancel, 12cts and 24cts Washingtons, etc. Also seen good Australasia inc. New South Wales octagonal frame 1/- rose, New Zealand Chalon heads inc. 3d dull purple imperf with four margins and light cds cancel, Tasmania 1/- orange imperf, etc, etc. The condition here is of course mixed and the stamps are stuck to the album pages, as was the practice when this collection was assembled. If this were not the case, excellent stamps like the Wurttemberg 18kr might not have remained in ,this for nearly 150 years! A great opportunity for those with the time and patience to separate the stamps from the page, with no doubt further sleepers certain and many items to be brought to light.
An 1875 edition European album well-filled with several hundred stamps, the vast majority pre-1880 with some very interesting areas. Some of the best are the GB with 3 penny blacks and an 1840 2d blue, followed by 1d red imperf with number '9' in maltese cross, 1867 5/- high values rose x2, etc, as well as a whole page of QV used abroad with a dozen or so used , in Malta inc. 6d brown used on piece, plus three used in Gibraltar inc. 1862 6d violet, etc. Then Netherlands with 50cts gold, Luxembourg #1, Switzerland strubelis to 1 franc, etc. The Asia section has a good range of Hong Kong to 96cts plus surcharges inc. 1885 $1 on 96cts, followed by Japan, Portuguese India, etc, leading on to Africa inc. Cape of Good Hope triangulars. Other good areas are the Canada with 10cts Prince Albert and a range of large and small queens, interesting South America especially Chile with lots of Columbus head imperfs, New Zealand with several Chalon heads, Tahiti horizontal and diagonal o/p postage dues, Victoria early orb and scepter queens inc. 1d red brown imperf with four margins and much more. This collection spans the use of paste as well as later hinges and will prove very rewarding when worked on and processed, stamp for stamp. Overall the Australian States , are almost as good as the GB, with many other good coutries too. , The condition of course does vary especially among the stuck down, , nevertheless a very exciting lot needing attention.
An excellent array of painstakingly produced copies from the workshop of Peter Winter, with well over 250 items, including 17 cover fronts, which would have cost well over $10,000 equivalent to buy in the 1980s from his literature (which is enclosed). Highlights include swiss classics inc. Basel Dove block of four on cover front, rayons inc. 10rp black and red on yellow and 5rp blue and red pair together on cover front, PAX 5fr in full sheetlet of eight imperf on granite paper, attractive German States issues 'used' on piece inc. Saxony #1s, Wurttemberg 70kr purple in replica full sheet of six embossed, Bermuda and British Guiana postmaster classics, etc, then more 'cover fronts' with Oldenburg, Hannover, much Wurttemberg inc. bisect, Saxony #1 and #2 together, etc, also Germany 20th century inc. zeppelin flights, , Thuringen Christmas sheet, Heydrich souvenir sheet, Nothilfe souvenir sheets 'used' on zeppelin covers, Goethe and Marienkirche sets in imperf sheets, etc, etc! There is also work here not by Peter Winter with a further 80+ items relating to Switzerland with Zurich numerals, double Genevas, rayons, poste locale, through to airmail first issues. These issues too are well-exectued, highly sought-after and difficult to find today, especially offered as one lot.
