Kent", a wonderfully fresh and choice mint example of this extremely rare and popular Queen Elizabeth period error, well centered, o.g., never hinged, extremely fine; according to the note in the Stanley Gibbons catalog, "it is believed that No. 216a came from a sheet which was first printed with the centre of the 2½d. and then accidentally included among the supply of the 6d. value and thus received the wrong frame. there have been seventeen reports of stamps showing the error, although it is believed that some of these may refer to the same example," in addition some have been hinged by collectors who did not realize that they had an error when they received it as a new issue or otherwise compromised; 2012 RPS certificate (S.G. #216a; £40,000). D'Antin/7 Oct. 70" c.d.s and backstamped Tours on the 18th which could be one of about four balloons flown in that period, the other two are later flights of January 1871including an envelope flown on "Le General Faidherbe" with "Paris/Rue D'Enghien/12 Janv. 71" c.d.s., backstamped Tours on the 15th, the third is a small folded letter and a scarcer posting to Brussels, Belgium on "Le Poste de Paris" with "Paris/Rue D'Enghien/16 Janv. 71" c.d.s and backstamped on the 21st, this latter with faults to the stamps and stain to the cover, the other two are fine-very fine.
