1899 Surcharge 'ONE/HALF/PENNY' on 1d blue with the Surcharge Inverted & Misplaced 'PENNY/ONE/HALF' SG 21a, large-part o.g., Cat £850 (as it has been since at least 2009). BPA Certificate (1953) as the then SG 25var. [Only one half-pane of 30 was affected. All examples show similar misplacement: see the New Zealand Handbook at page 113. Sold at the Prestige auction of 5.12.2009 for $930. Francois Boulangier's example sold in 2003 for $952]

AITUTAKI: 1920 Pictorials 3d black & blue Palmtree SG 27 lower-left corner block of 6 (3x2) Imperforate at Base, the central units with minor gum blemishes otherwise unmounted. A rare positional piece. Ex J Edgar Williams. [Sir Gawaine Baillie's lower-left corner block of 10 sold in 2007 for £552. However, with an estimate of only £150, Sotheby's implied it was an unissued variety from the same source as the imperf proof sheets. The New Zealand Handbook Volume V at page 375 makes clear this error occurred in the issued stamps: "At least one sheet of the 3d value missed the last strike of the comb machine, resulting in the stamps in the bottom row being imperf at the bottom [sic]". The Baillie result clearly impacted the sale of this block at the Prestige auction of 10.4.2010 for $1048]

1876-77 'VR' Underprints on Laid Paper 1d blue as SG 31 but with the 'VR' Underprint Inverted & Misplaced (also with part of a second impression at far-right), large-part o.g. Unlisted by Gibbons. Ex Gerald Patterson: sold for $975. BPA Certificate (1966) as the then SG 81 states "...is genuine". [As noted by a previous owner, "...the inverted overprint may have escaped notice by reason of it being so much off-centre, the inverted 'V' being at first sight easily mistaken for an 'R'...". Of course, because the underprint was printed before the design, technically it is the design that is inverted!]
1915-19 'WAR STAMP' Overprints ½d blue-green with the Overprint Inverted SG 138c marginal pair from the left of the sheet, well centred, the faintest evidence of having been mounted, Cat £1100+. This is the earliest of them, the only one from the first year of use, & perhaps the only "commercial" example. 1914 stampless OHMS cover with superb strike of the brass straight-line 'WAIVOU' h/s, 'GPO SUVA/28/OCT/ 1914/FIJI' arrival cds on the face, boxed 'T ("2d")' & a largely fine strike of the rare boxed 'PLEASE RETURN ENVELOPE/TO GPO WITH/NAME OF SENDER' (Proud #I27, recorded 5.12.1912 only) both suggesting that this was an unauthorised use of an OHMS envelope, duly endorsed "From S Lalanaisu/Fijian - Waivou", overall soiling & with pinholes at upper-left from being affixed in a Post Office file.
