image VERY EARLY "SHIP" MARK OF DUBLIN - ON COVER "P. THE MARMAID" FROM LISBON; 20 Mar. 1744 EL (light reinforced stain affects part of address but is clear of postal marks marks) from "Lisbon" to Dublin endorsed "P. the Marmaid Capn. Ellis, Q.D.G." with a very fine and extremely early small Dublin handstruck "SHIP" (few known; only 1738-44) on the front matching the "AP/16" Dublin Bishop Mark on the flap. It was charged "11d" (? five times 2d rate from Howth + 1d Ship Letter rate) - the contents ask the addressee to forward the "inclosed letters to Corke". Pre-1750 Ship Letter handstamps are very rare indeed, and this is one of only a handful that can definitely be allocated to Dublin. With copy of the 17 Apr. 1744 Lloyd's List showing the Dublin arrival of the "Mermaid, [Captain] Ellis". Important Exhibition item for any Irish or Maritime Collection.
