image CUNEIFORM CLAY TABLET FROM LAGASH IN IRAQ LISTING PAYMENTS MADE IN ANIMALS; Fine 2046 BC Sumerian baked clay tablet (c.33x40 mm) of the Ur III Period from the ancient Iraq city of Lagash (aka Shirpurla, located NW of the junction of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers and east of Uruk, about 22 km east of the modern town of Ash Shatrah) being an administrative document. With full transcription and translation (by the 1980s expert Dr Irving Finkel) of the 17 lines of readily legible Sumerian text (back and front); "1 large goat for the seat/throne, delivery Adda the laputtu official, Pitrum the maskim official; 1 goat for the Eninnu-bird temple [in Lagash], delivery Hunhabtash, Ur-Bau the maskim official. 3 oxen, 2 cows, 5 sheep, 7 female sheep, 3 goats for use in the cookhouse for the riders. [written by] Irmu the maskim official, on the 10th day from Nasaga, Sesdaku month, of the first year of Amar-Su'en" [who reigned 2046-2038 BC; i.e. 2046 BC]. Rare and attractive example of an authenticated and very early clay tablet. [Provenance; purchased by the vendor in the 16 July 1985 Christies Antiquities sale (one of 3 in lot 285) and listed as the "Property of a Lady" - believed to have been the widow of Sir Kenneth Clark, 1903-83, the famous broadcaster and art historian]. image EARLY LETTER - COVER ENDORSED "WITH A BOX BY EXPRESS" + 'STIRRUPS' & DESPATCH TIME; 10 Oct. 1592 E (flaps folded like an envelope; slightly toned vertical filing fold through address) from "Ferr[ar]a" to "Imola alle Casette" (to the Lodge at Imola; about 34 miles in all) unusually endorsed on the front; "Con una scatola stafetta" and "Parte da Ferr[ar]a. a diece Ottobre 92, hore 20" - "with a box by Express [mounted] messenger. It leaves Ferrara on October 10 [15]92 at 8 pm". To further emphasise the urgent nature of this letter there is also a fine triangular 'Stirrup' endorsement over the word "stafetta" showing that the messenger was to be on a horse (the most expensive type of express messenger at this date). Rare early Italian States Express cover. Cross Reference: EXPRESS MAIL, ITALIAN STATES, EARLY LETTERS (Image)

image EARLY LETTERS (BELGIUM) - "9½" POSTAL RATE COVER EX ANTWERP FORWARDING AGENT TO LONDON; Very fine 18 Oct. 1600 letter from “Anv[ers]a” (Antwerp) to Corsini in London was charged “9½” (9½ groats = 38d), which would have covered a bundle of 19 letters – rated at 2d each for local London delivery (or for delivery from Dover to London) delivered on the same day. This is one of only 10 such letters in the entire Corsini Correspondence with a postal rate without the “G” prefix or the “d” suffix; all the others were charged “½” or “1½”. This is the only example of this “9½” rate in the Corsini Correspondence (which also included just two “G9½” covers, both also from Antwerp, dated 1575 and 1600). This letter was also sent by the Antwerp Forwarding Agent, Gio A.G. Vergano concerning Corsini’s goods. Exhibition Quality. image EARLY LETTERS (BELGIUM) - "G8" POSTAL RATE COVER EX ANTWERP FORWARDING AGENT TO LONDON; Fine 13 Sept. 1600 EL from “Anv[ers]a” (Antwerp) to Corsini in London charged “G8” (8 groats = 32d), which would have covered a bundle of 16 letters – rated at 2d each for local London delivery (or for delivery from Dover to London) delivered on the same day. Only two other “G8” rate covers have been recorded from the whole of the Corsini correspondence (from Lyons in 1594 and from Middelburg in 1598). This letter was sent by the Antwerp Forwarding Agent, Gio A.G. Vergano; it concerned goods forwarded for Corsini from Antwerp to Middelburg and to Emden. image EARLY LETTERS - EXTREMELY EARLY INGOING COVER TO WEST INDIES - HOLLAND TO MARTINIQUE; Very fine 23 Oct. 1664 EL (in Portuguese; typed transcript + translation) from "Amsterdam" to a "Martenicas" (Martinique) merchant “Mr. Jacaob Gubay” - from his son confirming his safe arrival after a 9-week voyage (presumably from Martinique). It is endorsed “Par ami” [by a friend] and “Q.D.G.” [Whom God Preserve] by private ship, and it is too early to have had any postal rate or marking. This is believed to be the earliest recorded letter sent to or from Martinique and one of the earliest recorded ingoing letters from the Continent to the West Indies. Martinique was under French control at this date and its principal export was sugar, which was very expensive in Europe, but a group of 250 Portuguese/Dutch Jewish immigrant merchants – escaping from the Inquisition in Brazil – had been allowed to settle there in 1654. Presumably the Gubays were part of that group? (With relevant research notes.) [Ex Brian Brookes, 2018.]Cross Reference: EARLY LETTERS, FRENCH COLONIES, NETHERLANDS (Image)

image FERNANDO PO - EARLIEST RECORDED BRITISH POSTAL AGENCY COVER - 6d RATE TO G.B. VIA PLYMOUTH; Remarkable [19] Apr. 1858 stampless mourning env. (closed tear at top left above address and clear of marks) to Froom (Somerset) endorsed "Fernando Po" at bottom left of address, with v. fine Plymouth h.s. "6d" on the front and fine blue "PLYMOUTH/PACKET-LETTER" cds (7 June) on the reverse. This arrival date fits with the R.M.S. 'Ethiope' that arrived at Plymouth on 7 June from Fernando Po (et al); it had left Fernando Po on 29 April (per London 'Express' newspaper of 7 June 1858). The British Postal Agency on Fernando Po opened on 1 April 1858, but no postmarks were issued until 22 February 1859. Only two letters have been recorded sent from the island in this ‘interim’ period after the opening of the Postal Agency and before the arrival of the first handstamps (on c. 1 April 1859 though they have not been recorded used prior to 21 January 1862). The two covers are this April 1858 one and one dated June 1858 (from HMS Myrmidon; ex Sacher) with a G.B. 6d Lilac cancelled on arrival at Plymouth; both have Plymouth Packet Letter backstamps. [With detailed research notes.] Important earliest recorded cover handled by this tiny island's British Postal Agency.Cross Reference: SPANISH COLONIES, SPAIN, SHIP LETTERS, G.B USED ABROAD STAMPS & COVERS (Image)
