1917, U boat cover from Berlin to TIENTSIN, CHINA, franked with Germania 20 Pfg. ultramarine, clearly cancelled "BERLIN 13.1.17/W 50", beautifully struck date stamp "BREMEN 1 D.O.R. 16.1.17" next to it. On the front lead cancel " VIA SAN FRANCISCO " and blue return cancel " ZURÜCK / WEGEN EINSTELLUNG DES TAUCHBOOT / BRIEFVERKEHRS ZURÜCK AN DEN ABSENDER " together with violet censorship stamp "Q". On the reverse handwritten note about the repayment of the additional fee for the diving boat of RM 2.
As more and more trade connections abroad were interrupted by direct war enemies, the German Reich tried to re-establish the important trade and postal connections to the American continent. Goods, news and mail were to be transported from Germany to America by submarine. However, after two submarine voyages by the D.O.R. shipping company in Bremen, the USA entered the war against the Central Powers and submarine traffic was discontinued. Letters addressed to China represent one of the greatest rarities of submersible mail. ÷ 1917, Tauchbootbrief aus Berlin nach TIENTSIN, CHINA, frankiert mit Germania 20 Pfg. ultramarin, klar und übergehend entwertet "BERLIN 13.1.17/W 50", nebengesetzt schön abgeschlagener Datumstempel "BREMEN 1 D.O.R. 16.1.17". Vorderseitig Leitstempel " VIA SAN FRANCISCO " und blauer Retourstempel " ZURÜCK / WEGEN EINSTELLUNG DES TAUCHBOOT / BRIEFVERKEHRS ZURÜCK AN DEN ABSENDER " nebst violettem Zensurstempel "Q". Rückseitig handschriftlicher Vermerk über die Rückzahlung der Zusatzgebühr für das Tauchboot von 2 RM.
Als immer mehr Handelsverbindungen ins Ausland durch direkte Kriegsgegner unterbrochen wurden, versuchte das Deutsche Reich die wichtigen Handels- und Postverbindungen zum amerikanischen Kontinent wieder aufzubauen. Mit einem U-Boot sollten Waren, Nachrichten und Post von Deutschland nach Amerika transportiert werden. Nach zwei Tauchbootfahrten der Seereederei D.O.R. in Bremen traten die USA jedoch in den Krieg gegen die Mittelmächte ein, und der Tauchbootverkehr wurde eingestellt. Nach China adressierte Briefe stellen eine der größten Raritäten der Tauchbootpost dar.
