1848 missionary's lengthy entire letter headed "Ono Feejee June 17 1848" & signed "David Hazlewood", to his brother in Suffolk, British 'SHIP-LETTER' h/s, London transit b/s of 13AU13/1849 & 'BURY-ST-EDMUNDS' arrival b/s in blue across the flap, rated "8" for an incoming shipletter, rather decrepit & amateurishly "repaired" with glassine strips, which we expect could be greatly improved with some TLC. Ex Gerald Patterson. [Illustrated by David Alford at page 2. He records only six pre-1850 covers from Fiji, of which this is the latest. Ono is a small island in the Kadavu Group, south of Viti Levu. 14 months transit time from the Pacific Islands to England was not unusual in this period]
David Hazlewood was a Methodist missionary who, in 1850, published the first 'Feejeean' Grammar and 'Feejeean'/English Dictionary: see Lot 298156.
1890 commercial cover to France - an unusual destination from Fiji - with rare franking of Altered Dies Perf 10 'Four Pence' 14mm Overprint on 2d dull purple SG 43 (Cat £140 x8+ on cover, as it has been for at least 12 years) & 6d rose SG 48 tied by 'LEVUKA' cds, Suva transit & '...LES LYON/RHONE' arrival b/s, a little truncated at right on opening. 1903 (Dec) commercial double-rate cover to France originating at an outlying village or island with scarce franking of KEVII ½d 2d 2½d & 4d cancelled with ink lines, overstruck at Levuka where light boxed registration cachet applied, minor blemishes. 1905 cover with 'HEDEMANN, EVERS & CO/LEVUKA/FIJI' imprint on the flap to Switzerland with KEVII 4d & 5d tied by Levuka cds, boxed 'R___' h/s at U/L, London transit & Bern arrival b/s.
1917 OHMS 'RETURNED LETTER./Dead Letter Office, Fiji.' Envelope with 'RETURNED' & 'Dead' obliterated, 'FIJI/OFFICIAL/C.P./PAID' h/s at lower-left & 'G.P.O./[crown]/FIJI' impressed in wax on the flap, to Yorkshire with late usage of KGV 5d tied by 'SUVA FIJI/REGISTERED' cds & registration cachet at upper-left, London transit & 'BURSTWICK' arrival b/s, minor soiling. 1915 (June 24) usage of a piece of rough cardboard apparently cut from an ammunition box with 'HEADQUARTERS' cds of 24JU15 & Censor #2640 cachet in rosine, minor blemishes. The message states "...I am looking forward to the day when I will be able to write you a descent [sic] letter..." [Makeshift postcards are a highly significant element of the Gallipoli Story. They are recorded from between 29.5.1915 & 3.8.1915 only. It is estimated that only some 25 exist from New Zealanders. 1915 (Aug 9) very fine almost complete strike of 'N.Z. Expeditionary Forces/16.AUG.1915/No.1 hosptial ship' boxed d/s in violet on Ceylon 'Technical College, Colombo' picture postcard sent unfranked to New Zealand from "Alice" with message including "we're somewhere in the Arabian Sea. A monsoon is on ... A good many of the nurses are sick ...", couple of minor edge bends. 'No.1 Hospital Ship' was the Union Steamship Line steamer 'Maheno', which had been converted to treat casualties from Gallipoli; this card was sent from a nurse on the outward voyage to the Dardanelles, where she arrived in late-August 1915.
1915 cover with very fine strike of the rare 'HEADQUARTERS/OTAGO/27AUG1915/MOUNTED RIFLE/REGIMENT' datestamp in rosine (Firebrace #NZ30; ERD) & endorsed at L/L "(initials) OC No 2 Mobile Sect/NZVC", light HQ cds, minor blemishes & repaired corner at U/R clear of the h/s. Ex Gordon Darge. [The sender was Sgt John Blackie of the Veterinary Corps, who survived the war]
1915 (Dec 3) cover endorsed "NZ Division" & self-censored "HA Davies" at U/R, to GB with 'HEADQUARTERS/...' cds of 3DE15 (ERD on Gallipoli) & British-pattern 'PASSED BY/[crown]/No 2950/CENSOR' cachet in rosine. [The NZ Headquarters Field PO was moved from Mudros Island to Gallipoli only in mid-November, and was sent back to Egypt 15.12.1915. The cds is recorded used at Gallipoli between 3rd & 7th December only. Captain Henry Davies was killed on the Western Front]
1915 New Zealand Expeditionary Force Christmas/New Year greetings card with photograph within 'Landing at Anazac Cove (Dardenelles) 25th April 1915' & signed "John Langridge Lieut Canty Bat NZR", minor soiling. Rare ephemera. [Quite ironic, because all troops were withdrawn from Gallipoli in December 1915]
1916 (Jan 14) Trentham Military Camp envelope with largely very fine strike of 'N.Z. EXPEDITIONARY FORCE/18JAN1916/TROOPSHIP No.37' boxed d/s in violet sent to New Zealand by serviceman on board enclosing two-page letter on Trentham Military Camp stationery ('Trentham' crossed out & replaced with "HMNZT 37") with lengthy message including "... there is absolutely nothing to tell you, as we are not allowed to say where abouts we are right now, or what our next port might be ... I have been helping our two Chaplains censor the letters, we are opening the letters & sealing them up again ...", single-line 'PASSED BY MILITARY CENSOR' h/s in violet on face of envelope, which has a few edge faults at top. 'Troopship No.37' was the 'TS Maunganui' which departed New Zealand on 8.1.1916 with the 9th Reinforcements and arrived in Egypt on 8.2.1916.

1916 Egyptian PPC with racist message headed "Alexandria Jan 1st" with superb Indian-pattern 'PASSED BY CENSOR/FORCE IN EGYPT/ 14 ' cachet in red allocated to No 2 NZ Rifle Brigade as part of the Western Frontier Force. Rare. [On 17.11.1915, a force of New Zealanders Australians & Britons marched into the Libyan Desert to confront the querrelsome Sunussi tribes. The Kiwis were withdrawn at the end of December 1915]
1916 superb strike of 'N.Z. MILITARY POST OFFICE/14JUL1916/TROOPSHIP No.54' boxed d/s in violet on Zululand 'Native Hut' picture postcard sent unfranked to New Zealand endorsed "On Active Service", short message includes "it is very hot", straight-line 'CENSORED' h/s alongside, couple of minor blemishes. 'Troopship No.54' was the 'Willochra' which departed New Zealand on 27.6.1961 with the 13th Reinforcements and arrived in England on 28.12.1916; the postcard was presumably purchased when the ship stopped at Durban, Natal.
1917 postcard showing troop transport steamship sent unfranked to Christchurch, endorsed from serviceman "Pt LR Willis" on board "On Active Service On the High Seas", 'PASSED BY CENSOR/[crown]/No.16 NZ' h/s applied after both his unit details and the name of the ship (inscribed on the view side) were obliterated, 'WELLINGTON/9-JL PAID 1½D' continuous machine cancel in red struck alongside, light central fold and minor edge bends.
