image 1915 (June 24) usage of a piece of rough cardboard apparently cut from an ammunition box with 'HEADQUARTERS' cds of 24JU15 & Censor #2640 cachet in rosine, minor blemishes. The message states "...I am looking forward to the day when I will be able to write you a descent [sic] letter..." [Makeshift postcards are a highly significant element of the Gallipoli Story. They are recorded from between 29.5.1915 & 3.8.1915 only. It is estimated that only some 25 exist from New Zealanders. Gordon Darge's four examples sold at the Prestige auction of 5.3.2011 for an average of $748 each]

image 1915 (Aug 9) very fine almost complete strike of 'N.Z. Expeditionary Forces/16.AUG.1915/No.1 hosptial ship' boxed d/s in violet on Ceylon 'Technical College, Colombo' picture postcard sent unfranked to New Zealand from "Alice" with message including "we're somewhere in the Arabian Sea. A monsoon is on ... A good many of the nurses are sick ...", couple of minor edge bends. 'No.1 Hospital Ship' was the Union Steamship Line steamer 'Maheno', which had been converted to treat casualties from Gallipoli; this card was sent from a nurse on the outward voyage to the Dardanelles, where she arrived in late-August 1915.

image 1915 (Dec 3) cover endorsed "NZ Division" & self-censored "HA Davies" at U/R, to GB with 'HEADQUARTERS/...' cds of 3DE15 (ERD on Gallipoli) & British-pattern 'PASSED BY/[crown]/No 2950/CENSOR' cachet in rosine. [The NZ Headquarters Field PO was moved from Mudros Island to Gallipoli only in mid-November, and was sent back to Egypt 15.12.1915. The cds is recorded used at Gallipoli between 3rd & 7th December only. Captain Henry Davies was killed on the Western Front]

image 1916 (Jan 14) Trentham Military Camp envelope with largely very fine strike of 'N.Z. EXPEDITIONARY FORCE/18JAN1916/TROOPSHIP No.37' boxed d/s in violet sent to New Zealand by serviceman on board enclosing two-page letter on Trentham Military Camp stationery ('Trentham' crossed out & replaced with "HMNZT 37") with lengthy message including "... there is absolutely nothing to tell you, as we are not allowed to say where abouts we are right now, or what our next port might be ... I have been helping our two Chaplains censor the letters, we are opening the letters & sealing them up again ...", single-line 'PASSED BY MILITARY CENSOR' h/s in violet on face of envelope, which has a few edge faults at top. 'Troopship No.37' was the 'TS Maunganui' which departed New Zealand on 8.1.1916 with the 9th Reinforcements and arrived in Egypt on 8.2.1916. (Qty cover + letter)

Rare. [On 17.11.1915, a force of New Zealanders Australians & Britons marched into the Libyan Desert to confront the querrelsome Sunussi tribes. The Kiwis were withdrawn at the end of December 1915]

MILITARY POST OFFICE/14JUL1916/TROOPSHIP No.54' boxed d/s in violet on Zululand 'Native Hut' picture postcard sent unfranked to New Zealand endorsed "On Active Service", short message includes "it is very hot", straight-line 'CENSORED' h/s alongside, couple of minor blemishes. 'Troopship No.54' was the 'Willochra' which departed New Zealand on 27.6.1961 with the 13th Reinforcements and arrived in England on 28.12.1916; the postcard was presumably purchased when the ship stopped at Durban, Natal.
