image 1914, postcard from "HERTOGENBOSCH 21.VIII 14" (Holland) to Ropienka/Austrian Galicia, message in German questioning about the well-being of the addressee. The card was first held in Germany "Unzulässig / Zurück" (Not admitted / retour), this was crossed out again and the item was forwarded into occupied Poland where a bilingual 2line "Wegen Kriegslage retour / Z powodu wojny retour" (due to war action retour) was applied. This card reflects the early period of WW I on the eastern front when Russian forces advanced deeply into East Prussia and then into Austrian Galicia. This advance was stopped at the battle of Tannenberg 26-30 Aug 1914, a few days after this card was posted. (Image)
