image British Solomon Islands used in New Guinea. 1918 (May 31) Cover to London bearing British Solomon Islands 1913 ½d strip of three with both end stamps diagonally bisected and a 11d vertically bisected all cancelled by "KIETA" datestamps; and a single 1907 Large Canoe issue 6d with central "KIETA" c.d.s (16 MR 18), accompanied by a photocopy of a 1924 (Jan 22) letter from Stanley Gibbons Ltd to R.P. Croom-Johnson stating "The Solomon Is. used in Papua sent for your inspection were purchased by us from a Naval Officer who was on one of the warships stationed at Kieta, he has assured us they were used in the ordinary way on the date of the postmarks as "Provisionals"". An intriguing pair; we can find no mention of the use of Solomon Islands stamps in New Guinea in 1918 in any literature, and these are the only examples we have seen. (Cover + stamp).
