Earthquake and TIDAL WAVE aftermath at St. Thomas. 1867 stampless cover to London pmk'd SPANISH-TOWN A/NO 25 67 cds rated 2/- with side flap opned to display Kingston C/NO 25 67 and London DE 18 67 arrival. Carried by R.M.S. La Plata but unable to enter St. Thomas harbour as scheduled du earthquake and further shocks with presumed fear of further tsunami. St. Thomas harbour devastated by hurricane on OC 29 1867 with loss of Royal Mail steamers Derwent, Rhone, and Wye. The following month on the afternoon of NO 18 1867 and earthquake magnitude 7.5 occured in the Anegaa through, located between the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Croix, and St. Thomas. The earthquake consisted of two shocks, ten minutes apart, which generated two tsunami waves which struck the harbour at St. Thomas. Unique. Very rare. (Image)

1890 Provisional 2½d. on 4d. red-brown, rejoined horizontal pair, both stamps showing varieties "OVERPRINT DOUBLE" and "PFNNY" for "PENNY", and the left hand stamp additionally with "broken K" for "Y", used and cancelled by "HALF WAY TREE/6 AP/91" c.d.s. A VERY RARE PAIR (Pos. 10+11; setting 2) showing double overprint in combination with "PFNNY" and "broken K", unlisted by SG in this form. Signed by P. Holcombe + his notes (on piece).
