image IRISH ROUTING COVER EX ST. JOHN TO G.B. WITH RED "SKIBBEREEN/SHIP LETR" MARK, ETC.; 9 Dec. 1809 EL from St. John to Liverpool "P. Ship Ardent, Cap. Bouch" charged "1/3" and then "3/1" with a mainly very fine rare red "SKIBBEREEN/SHIP LETR" (Rob.S1; rare in red and an early example in this colour - filing fold) nicely placed on the front, also having a fine orange-red Dublin "Mermaid"-framed transit d.s. across the join on the reverse. image RARE PACKET LETTER BLOWN OFF COURSE AND LANDED IN IRELAND IN PLACE OF FALMOUTH; Rare 1 Jan. 1813 EL (minor fold faults) from "VIZEU" (v. fine oval-framed mark on front) to London with fine "LISBON" transit mark on the front; carried by the P.O. Packet 'Queen Charlotte' which ship was diverted by bad weather to the Irish coast, and so with a mostly very fine black "KINSALE/SHIP·LETTER" mark (Rob.S2; earliest known usage) also on the front. Good Campaign letter with details of appalling Army sickness during the Portuguese winter; "In Vizeu alone, the average number of men that die in our Hospitals daily, is 17; the mortality, we hear, is as great in other Hospital Stations." Initially charged as a Ship Letter at "3/9", but then charged at the (correct) full Packet rate of "5/-". Exceedingly rare, if not unique, example of a Peninsular War period cover carried by a Falmouth Packet that was diverted via Ireland. Important Irish Maritime Rarity of Exhibition Quality. SOLDIER's CONCESSION RATE COVER WITH THE RARE RED 1st-TYPE BOXED "INDIA LETTER/CORK"; 2 Nov. 1835 EL (full typed transcript; worn central fold and some reinforced edges, etc.) headed & countersigned for the Concession Rate for a Drummer of the 38th Regiment at "Kurnal" to Reading with a mainly fine strike of the rare smaller 1st-Type boxed red "INDIA LETTER/CORK" on the front beside a wrongly charged "1/9" letter rate and the corrected "3[d]" Soldier's Concession Rate. Rare; only one other example in red of this India letter mark Ex Stone believed extant - and probably unique on military concession mail.
