image RARE PRE-1800 FANCY EMBOSSED LETTER-SHEET EX DUBLIN - PLANS FOR ELOPEMENT, ETC.; Remarkable 1 Feb. 1798 EL (some worn folds etc. from frequent reading, but complete) from Dublin (faint part Bishop Mark) to Exeter charged "8[d]" written on fancy coloured embossed paper - a yellow frame to an embossed border with a fancy cartouche at the top (quiver of arrows, snakes, oak twigs, etc.). One of the earliest recorded postally used British pictorial letter-sheets. Fascinating contents written by "M.A.G." [Mary Anne Gandon, daughter of the famous Dublin architect James Gandon, 1742-1823] to Lieut. Robert Annesley [son of Earl Annesley] telling him that she could not elope to England with him unless they were firstly secretly married in Dublin. “My being Married in England would never vindicate my leaving Dublin ‘unmarried’…”. She tells her lover to get leave from the Army, to take a boat from Bristol and find a secret location in Dublin for the marriage by special licence. Plus privately carried c.1 Mar. 1798 EL to Annesley from a Dublin friend who has arranged for the marriage with full instructions; “...be punctual at the house (2 o’clock). Your friend can order your chaise again ½ past 2 o’clock at this door. The Rings I suppose you have remembered… I enclose a size”. The secret wedding duly took place on 12 Mar. 1798. With 22 Sept. 1825 letter (no wrapper) from the happy couple's son (James Annesley) to his German fiancee with amusing tales of aristocratic high life around Ireland. (3 letters) Cross Reference: PICTORIALS, PRINTED (Image)
