1870-71 FIJI TIMES EXPRESS, second issue on rose laid batonne paper, the SE-TENANT BLOCK OF FOUR from R3-4/3-4 of the setting, the upper pair being the 1d value, with 3d at lower left and 9d (showing comma after 'EXPRESS') at lower right, wonderfully fresh with 1 colour and large part o.g. Characteristic gum wrinkling and slight splitting (from the heavily impressed framlines), still in exceptional condition for this issue with virtually complete roulettes (partial at left, absent as always at foot). The only composite block containing three different values still in private hands, and comparable in importance and desirability to the listed se-tenant strip of four (which does not contain the 3d value). Ex Ferrary (Sale 7, lot 312), and documented by Phillips (The Postage Stamps of the Fiji Islands, 1908) p.12 as item 'j'. A phenomenal classic multiple of the highest rarity, which has not been seen on the market for nearly 90 years. (Image)
