image VERY RARE EARLY INTERNAL IRISH "4d" POSTAL RATE 1657 EL (file folds, small faults) to Capt John Mannfort in Dublin and rated '4d' (over 40 miles) on front and red wax remnant on rear, signed 'Jo. Campbell' and with filing endorsement 'Mr John Campbell of Ireland 1657'. Fine exceptionally early example of a internal postal rate. image VERY RARE "D" IN CIRCLE MARK OF DUBLIN/LONDON ON FREE FRANK COVER TO LONDON; Fine 27 Aug. 1718 EL from "Breck[ington?]" to London franked "Free Molesworth" with a m/s "6" Dublin-to-London charge cancelled and replaced by the London "squiggle" (? privilege or free?), having a very fine small black "D" in circle mark (15mm diameter) on the top flap and a fine "2/SE" London arrival Bishop Mark on the bottom flap. Three other examples of this "D" mark are known (dated 1717 & 1719) and it is thought to be the precursor of the 1720-87 "DUBLIN" marks; they all occur only on Irish mail to/via London. image RARE RED DUBLIN "CHARITY LETTER/POST PAID" ON COMPLETE TURNED "NATIVE IRISH" LANGUAGE FREE COVER; Spectacular Aug. 1822 two-way turned mainly printed EL (mainly printed contents ref. recommended Irish Schoolmaster) with printed "IRISH SOCIETY for promoting the Education of the Native Irish, through the medium of their own Language" heading above the address, sent from Dublin to Bruff, one way (with partly fine very rare red Dublin "CHARITY LETTER/POST PAID" on the front and a faint Dublin d.s. of on the reverse; it was then returned and re-posted with the same "IRISH SOCIETY.... Language" heading above the fully printed "SIR EDWARD S. LEES, POST-OFFICE, DUBLIN" address posted with "LIMERICK/94" mileage d.s. and charged for the local Dublin 1d Post with v. fine h.s. "1" mark. Similar example sold for £1,100 in our Sept. 2021 auction plus c1826 slightly defective front to Newcastle also for the Irish Society with v.rare scroll-type "CHARITY LETTER" h.s. in red on front.
