image 1882 ½pi Emerald-green on Crown CC watermarked paper with small "½" surcharge essay, hinged to a piece bearing the explanatory note "The above stamp came originally from the Ferrari collection. It is said to be an essay. The stamp is watermarked Crown CC, printed in fugitive ink. The stamps were overprinted with two fractions in 1882 for general issue, but in a different type. I have never seen a similar type. A.L. Pemberton, 10th Aug. 1949". Tiny fault at top, otherwise fine, a rare and intriguing essay, not recorded in the Cyprus handbook (which contains numerous references on this issue by A.L Pemberton, a noted specialist on Cyprus), probably unique.
