1885 Handpainted stamp size essay for a proposed set of eight to replace the local surcharges then in use, superbly painted in blue on tracing paper, the value tablet undenominated, with drawings of the eight proposed value tablets below, dated "FEB 10 1885", endorsed below "The Colours for the various duties to be shown in the scheme of colours dated Jany 21, 1885", 73x101mm. This issue was never proceeded with, Ceylon instead ordering De La Rue to surcharge existing Ceylon stamps with six new values, another four new stamps in a differing design being issued in 1886. A magnificent and unique essay from the De La Rue archives. Photo included on Front Cover. (Image1)
