image 1971 usage of green/green apparently undenominated aerogramme featuring a jetliner inscribed 'ARIANA' with 'POSTES AFGANES' at the base, overprinted with the more correct 'POSTES AFGHANES' & '14 AFS' (value) at right & in Afghani at left, the values crudely scored-out & equally crude '8 Afs...' surcharge h/s at the top, to New Jersey with lengthy social letter, minor 'sticky tape' stains. Surely the aerogramme most difficult to describe! [Aryana Airlines was formed in 1955. It is unclear when the name was changed to Ariana but it was before the issue of theis aerogramme. Snce the 1980s it has been known as Ariana Afghan Airlines] The letter provides a travel itinerary, commencing with a bus from Kabul to New Delhi, then by air to Kathmandu, "...Nepal is getting uptight about extending visas due to...something in the beginning of the year...[The Afghans are] really fine people...How do you explain an electronic computer to somebody who lives in a mud house...The closest we could come was the abacus that the pharmacist used..." Useful thing, an abacus. Then, "...it takes 45 minutes to cash a travellers check because everything is done by hand..." The reference to a ruckus in Nepal was to the King & Queen being murdered by their son who also shot himself but survived for three days during which time he was anointed as king!! Outstanding social history!
