image 1852 LAND CLAIM: EL dated 28 Oct. 1852 written by James N. Casik (a Native North American acting as translator) in Grand River, C.W. (Ontario, Canada) to Mr. Wm. H. Steward, Member of the House of Delegates, Baltimore concerning a land claim in Maryland by the Nanticoke nation. The letter was rated "6" in ms with a fine s/l CANADA 10 CTS. and a fine double circle ONONDAGA / C.W. hs around "28th Oct 1852" ms on the front, and a fine double circle SENECA / OC29 / 1852 / C.W. transit on the reverse. In overall fine and clean condition, some reinforcements on fold corners which does not obscure the letter. A small insight in to the process that ultimately led to the survival of the Nanticoke culture in the USA. (Image)
