image ST KILDA - THE EVACUATION: Pages from a written-up display, interspersed with contemporary newspaper cuttings, which chronicle the evacuation of St Kilda, inc. Letter to C. E. Rhodes, naturalist and ornithologist, dated 17 July 1930, signed Neil Ferguson (Postmaster), mentioning the impending evacuation and Capt. Kneeshaw (who oversaw it), together with the envelope it was carried in, cancelled 1½d stamp tied St Kilda 19 July 1930; letter to same addressee by same correspondent, cancelled 1½d stamp tied St Kilda 27 Aug. 1930, in which the writer states "this will be the last mail as we are leaving on the 1 Sept. if weather permits" and "we are all so busy packing at present"; unused RP PPC, pub. and date unknown, showing the old and new village around St Kilda Bay; c. 1902 PPC, pub. unknown, showing seven, male islanders; another, date unknown, showing a group of seven St Kilda women, pub. A MacDougall, Fort William (damaged corner); two B&W PPCs of Loch Aline and Larachbeg, Morven where many of the islanders were settled; and four modern covers and a photograph commemorating the 50th anniversary of the evacuation, two covers signed by surviving inhabitants.
