c.1892 5c Essay depicting General Jose de San Martin, a Photo of the General applied in the centre, the remainder handpainted in black and sepia wash, the painted essay 140x182mm, on thin card (185x222mm), the reverse with pencil note showing the size of the current artwork with instructions to reduce it to 26x20mm. A superb essay, probably from the South American Bank Note Co. This design was not adopted, but this same vignette was used for the 1p-5p stamps of 1892-97.
