Rangoon Jail. 1944 3d P.O.W cards to "Lt, R.C Fullarton, P.O.W Rangoon Jail, Burma", one without a Japanese censor probably delivered after the war, the other censored by the Japanese but readdressed to "Ship unknown, c/o P.O Box 164, London E.C", probably found in Rangoon after Fullarton's departure, with red F.P.O 305 c.d.s of Rangoon (Nov 10), boxed "Return To Sender" and "RECEIVED IN UNDELIVERED MAILS / FROM TERRITORY FORMERLY OCCUPIED / BY JAPANESE FORCES", the reverse handstamped "Head Clerk / Recovered P.O.W Mail Centre". Also a 1942 (May 28) airgraph to Fullarton at "Frontier Force 4, Base Post Office, Rangoon", returned in an Indian Airgraph envelope marked "Prisoner of War" and handstamped "RETOUR / INCONNU". Hong Kong / Japan. 1943 Stampless cover from Gloucester to "Gnr L.F Lees, British P.O.W, Camp 8, Hong Kong" with black seal of Takamaru applied in Tokyo, returned with violet boxed "IT IS REGRETTED THAT / THIS ITEM COULD NOT BE / DELIVERED BECAUSE THE / ADDRESSEE IS REPORTED / PRESUMED DECEASED"; and 1945 stampless cover from Brighton to "CSM E. Soden, 1st Middlesex Regt, Osaka P.O.W Camp, Kobe Sub Camp, Japan" with violet "RETURNED FROM ABROAD / SERVICE SUSPENDED". Both addressees were on the "Lisbon Maru" when it was sunk by the U.S.S "Grouper" on 1st October 1942; Rees died in the sinking whilst Soden was rescued by Chinese fishermen and subsequently recaptured by the Japanese. The first with staining from the violet cachet, otherwise fine. (2).

image 1943-45 Cards and covers from Lance Bombardier Alan Hall, sent during his captivity in Saigon and after his release, to his parents in Dorset. Thailand P.O.W cards comprising type 3 card (10 July 1943), type 4/5 cards (31 Jan & 15 May 1944) all with the return address shown as No. 1 P.O.W Camp Thailand, and scarce type 6 card from Saigon (21 Aug 1945), all with Japanese censors, the final card written six days after the Japanese surrenderer unusually still censored by the Japanese but also with "UNIT CENSOR / AA317". Also 1945 (Sep 8) stampless air letter with "RAFPOST 6" c.d.s of Rangoon, written from Saigon, content includes "In April 1942 we left Singapore and came to Saigon where I was one of the favoured 450 who stayed here until now. We had a hard time but not nearly so bad as those in Burma and Thailand as we were in a civilised country .... we did not get any letters for two years but now I have over a hundred, the last Air Mail card was in June 1944"; and a stampless Australian Red Cross lettercard from H.M.T "Ormonde" at Port Suez (Oct 13) which includes "I was fortunate not to be on the railway in Thailand but stayed in Indo-China, the address of the camps was the same. The letters which I received yesterday were the first since May 1945 which were all pre-March 1944...... Because of the envelope don't think I am in hospital. It is the only one I have". A rare and interesting correspondence from Saigon (see Tett vol.3, p.168-174). (6). Photo on Page 34. (Image1)

Tett only records one other example of this Singapore P.O.W card with preprinted messages, sent by an Indian P.O.W (the cards presumably only issued to Indian & Nepalese P.O.Ws), and this is the only recorded item from a Nepalese Gurkha P.O.W in a Japanese camp. Thailand - Civilian Internee Mail

The Vanes cover with two differing "Transferred to Thailand" cachets and endorsed "Head Quarters Group (Non Pladuk)"; the others endorsed "OVL L 6/11/42", "OVL / F 18/4/43" or simply "F".
