[½d convenience over-payment]
1894-98 Postal Fiscal frankings comprising 1) 1894 to Sydney with 2d solo tied Fremantle duplex; 2) 1895 to USA with 1d and Swan ½d x3 paying 2½d foreign letter rate; 3) 1896 registered to New Zealand with 1d & 3d x2 paying double 2d Empire rate plus 3d registration fee; and 4) 1898 to New Zealand with 3d solo tied 'SHIP MAIL ROOM/PERTH' duplex, minor blemishes & a few edge faults.

1895 (Oct 31) official envelope with Coat of Arms embossed on the flap, to England with Postal Fiscals 1d x5 paying double the 2½d per ½oz letter rate tied by multiple strikes of 13-bar dumb obliterator with very fine 'NORTH FREMANTLE/WA' cds alongside, a couple of minor blemishes. PO 2/6/1884.
1898 (July 4) to New Zealand with rare albeit phiatelic franking of Postal Fiscals 2/6d solo tied by indistinct 'R' h/s with superb almost-complete strike of 'REGISTERED/PERTH, W.A' oval d/s in violet on face, Auckland Registered arrival b/s, minor adhesion on reverse. [From 5.9.1893, values to 1/- became valid for postage. Higher values were not authorised but were tolerated]
1899 usage of ½d Postal Card to Germany with a very fine strike of a most unusual segmented-bars cancel apparently of Kununalling (part-cds of MY4/99 below), Coolgardie & Perth transits & Berlin arrival of 5.6.99, lengthy message in German headed "Sugarloaf Mine". The first example of the killer we can recall having seen & it's certainly not listed in PMI for either Kununalling or Coolgardie.

1900 (Sept 27) J&W Bateman, Merchants envelope to "FA Henriques, Indent & Manufacturing Agent, Perth" [no street address] with Postal Fiscals 1d pair tied by Fremantle duplex cancels, held for collection at the GPO with 'LC ROOM' & 'POSTE RESTANTE' cds on reverse, minor repaired edge faults.
1905 (Jan 19) mourning cover from England with KEVII 2½d to "Post Office/Fremantle" with Fremantle arrival b/s of FE17/05, endorsed on the face "This letter came by the Orient/SS Orizaba, stranded at Garden Island/W Aus at 10.30am Thursday 16th Feby 1905", some discolouration/staining mostly on the reverse. A rare shipwreck item: the only cover recorded by Brian Peace and illustrated by him at page 216. Ex John Woolfe - sold in 2006 for £977 - and Robin Gwynn. [Approaching Fremantle, visibility was affected by coastal bushfires & the 'Orizaba' ran into Coventry Reef, off Garden Island. The ship was completely wrecked but there was no loss of life. Mail was undamaged & forwarded without a cachet or advice letter]
1906 (May 12) New Zealand PPC with Swan 1d pink to "Hamilton/Ontario" but mis-directed to Victoria where 'MISSENT TO/HAMILTON' boxed h/s applied endorsed "Victoria" (just to be sure) and 'HAMILTON/ MY21/06/VICTORIA' part-duplex alongside, on-forwarded with 'HAMILTON/CANADA/JUL 6/1906' machine arrival also tying the stamp, a couple of minor blemishes.
FRANK STAMPS: 1897 very fine strike of 'WORKING RAILWAYS/8 SEP. 97/WESTERN AUSTRALIA' triple-ring Frank Stamp (37mm diameter) on a large piece of OHMS cover-front originally sent to Albany (WA) with Perth 'GPO/D' duplex cancel of same day, then re-directed to London, a couple of minor aging marks. Unlisted in Hans Karman's 'Frank & Free', although he does list several others of the same pattern. [The Working Railways Department was concerned with the administration of the system such as the setting of freight charges, as opposed to its operation, which was the province of the WA Government Railways]
