image 1853 local entire headed "Mount Gellibrand/24th March 1853" & signed "Beal & Prebeck", addressed to "IS Favier/Clerk of Petty Sessions/Colac" with Thomas Ham 1d dull red SG 8a (characteristically cut very close at left & top but with good margins at right & base and a fragment of the adjoining unit below), poor Barred Oval '25' & a light but clear crowned-oval 'COLAC/[crown]/MA*25/1853/VICTORIA' b/s, minor aging & a bit soiled. An extremely rare provincial town letter at the 1d 'drop' rate. According to John Barwis' Census only 27 town letters bearing Half-Lengths are recorded. Of these, 25 are from Melbourne. This is stated to be the only provincial town letter in private hands, and that only one other Barred Oval '25' cover is recorded. Rodney Perry (2006, erroneously states 1851 for 1853), RPSofL (2018, wrongly states the stamp is SG 8) & BPA (2020) Certificates. The Perry error has resulted in this item being listed by John Barwis at page 146 as being from 1851. Mount Gellibrand is an extinct volcano nearer to Birregurra than Colac, and the site of a sheep station held by Charles Ayrey (aka Airey), who sold the property to his manager, Charles Beal, in 1852. The letter, which is about registration of sheep brands, must have been carried privately to Colac & posted there. Beal arrived at Port Phillip in March 1839. NB: Lake Colac was officially renamed Colac only on 1.1.1854. However, as proven by this letter, the name "Colac" was in use earlier than that &, in fact, the 'COLAC' d/s is recorded from -.1.1852.

image 1855 double-rate entire with scarce franking of Woodblocks Imperf 6d orange pair (margins close to large) tied by fine to very fine strikes of Barred Oval '62' (rated R) of 'QUEENSCLIFF' (very fine crowned-oval on the face), to Melbourne with arrival b/s of the next day. [Between 1.5.1854 & 30.6.1855 only, the domestic rate was 6d, the same as to England! 6d rate letters are scarce & double-rate items even moreso. Ben Palmer's single-rate 1854 cover sold in 2010 for SFr264. The writer, GC Whiting states "I left Hobson's Bay...in tow of Steamer Ada" & speaks of anchoring "off the light House inside of the Heads", which would be off Queenscliff. In the first of two postscripts he states - confirming the double-rate - "Enclosed is a letter which I wish you to pay the postage on and forward by the ship Lightning..."]
