image 1870, small envelope dated 26.9.1870 from Buffalo via New York to Rome (occupied by Italy on 20.9.1870), transported with closed mail via North German Union (rate 14 c. per half ounce from July 1870 to October 1871), insufficiently franked with 10 c. brown without grill, underpayment noted by "4" in red, very fine fancy star cancel, black "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID", the letter departed from New York on 1.10. to Queenstown and via London, Ostende and Aachen by closed mail and then to Rome, where the total postage was marked on left in blue "98 cti" (14 c.+ 4 c. penality), restartet with bajocchi currency blue "10" (baj = 10,5 c.) and the collecting amount "7 1/2" (baj.) in blue and repeated in black; very interesting and very fine cover (explanation included) (Mi. 41).
