Postal History.Postal History.Alaska
Alaska Territory -- Ketchikan 1909 cover from Edward Marsden to Amos Wells Not only an early Alaska cover, but a cover for correspondence between two prominent people. The Rev. Edward Marsden was a Canadian-American missionary and member of the Tsimshian nation who became the first Alaska Native to be ordained in the ministry. He was born in Metlakatla, BC. As a teenager, Marsden was one of the approximately 800 Tsimshians who undertook an epic canoe voyage in 1887 to found the dissident community of "New Metlakatla" on Annette Island in the very southeast of Alaska. The Presbyterian missionary Sheldon Jackson arranged for Marsden to attend the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania and then Marietta College in Ohio, making him the first Alaska Native to receive higher education in the "lower 48." During his education there, he joined the Presbyterian Church. In 1897 he became the first North American Indian to be licensed to preach in the U.S. Amos Russel Wells was a United States editor, author and professor. He graduated from Antioch College in 1883; was professor of Greek and geology at Antioch College 1883-1891 and from 1891 editor of the Christian Endeavor World, Boston- He was a voluminous author, no less than 63 titles being credited to his pen. Cover shows wear at top. Historic piece. (Image1)

Ephemera -- Lot of Eaton's Fine Letter Papers Cinderella stamps In 1938 Eaton Paper Company contracted the American Bank Note Company to engrave plates and make a series of 10 label stamps. The engraved scenes depict views of New York City and advertising for Eaton's Fine Letter Paper. The labels were to be released with the opening of the New York World's Fair. Unfortunately the labels looked so much like stamps that people put them on letters. The postal department demanded Eaton discontinue the stamps. American Bank Note Company destroyed the printing plates. A limited number of these stamps are available. Lot contains a full set and quantity of extras. (Image1)

Massachusetts -- Fitchburg 1929 sea and airmail cover to London via Boston and Galway Ireland Cover originated in Fitchburg MA, went to Boston and put on board SS Karlsruhe for transatlantic shipment to Galway Ireland. Green event label attached enroute. The label was used in connection with August 26, 1929 Galway to London experimental flight that was intended to speed up mail from America. Flight is listed as AC4 in Irish catalogs. 1,234 pieces of mail were carried, postmarked Boston or New York. Mail was flown by hydroplane from the Karlsruhe to Galway, then by normal airmail to London. This was hoped to save one or two days in transporting mail between USA and Britain.
