image CALIFORNIA (11) Envelopes w/ Northern California postmarks, each contains letters from an only son (lawyer) who left home to make his fortune in California, addressed to his mother and sisters in Fannettsburg, PA; dated between Sept 1856 and Thanksgiving 1860, all but one are 10¢ Nesbitt entires U16, U16a, U18a; other is stamped (but the 3¢ Washington is likely not original); three are inscribed "Via Panama" and one letter asks his mother to use this phrase on her letters to him; postmarks are (1) Downieville, (3) Patterson (Nevada County) but written in North San Juan and (7) Marysville incl "Paid in Stamps" pmk; readable content w/ info on life in California, gold only mentioned once as is the "Mormon War," it's hard for an honest man to do business but the climate is wonderful, and he tells of the murdered freemason and the five Catholic sisters who arrived from Baltimore (only one of which is pretty); he yearns to return home once he makes enough money; F [Proceeds benefit APS] (Image)
